15 Easy Steps to Draw a Rose
Roses are very popular flowers and are generally seen as a symbol of love. However, they are quite difficult to draw - they are made up of several layers of petals. You have to add pieces carefully, and then paint the overall light and shade. If you don't want to rely on reference pictures and want to draw your own personal style of roses from scratch, I'll show you how in this short tutorial.
Supplies you need:
->Hard pencil (HB)
->Medium soft pencil (2B or smaller)
->Soft pencil (5B or smaller)
->ArtBeek mixed media paper
->pencil sharpener
Step 1
Start by drawing a teardrop/egg shape with a hard pencil. Use very light lines. This will be the inner bud of the rose.
Step 2
Draw the "opening" of this shape.
Step 3
Draw some small petals inside.
Step 4
Draw a heart around these petals - this will be the outline of the other petals.
Step 5
Use lines to connect the heart outline to the rest of the bud to create the shape of the petals.
Step 6
draw another heart...
Step 7
Draw another heart shape, but this time make the shape more irregular and have a bigger opening.
Step 8
At this stage we need one more petal. Its perspective will be more complicated, so look carefully:
Step 9
We need to place the buds inside the "cups" made of petals. Spell it out first with small petals...
Step 10
The rest of the petals should curve more and more downward.
Step 11
When done, accentuate the lines you want to emphasize to bring out the final shape.
Step 12
Using a softer pencil, draw the inner shadow of the rose. Draw lightly first...
Step 13
Use the same pencil to slightly emphasize the edges of the petals. Don't draw it all!
Step 14
Go back to a hard pencil and add a little texture to the areas that hit the light. The darker the rose, the darker it can be painted here.
Step 15
Finish coloring with the softest pencil and use it to draw the darkest crevices.
